Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on Turkish Top Court annulling the bill proposing to lift the headscarf ban today (Tuesday) in his party meeting with the delegates of the parliament. He also urged Top Court to explain the reasoning for the decision;
"The Constitutional Court must certainly explain why it examined the essence of the reform in the (headscarf) case"
Erdogan also commented on the public will and Justice and Development Party’s current position in the parliament. He said that ‘the nation asks justice and democracy’. He also stated that "Legislative powers belong only to the elected parliament. No one has the right to put itself in the place of the legislative," by referring to the Top Court.
From Erdogan long waited speech, there can be well understood that Justice and Development Party does not want to step back and Erdogan is not willing to use a mild language in order to stabilize the current situation in Turkey.
In Turkey, laic system is a red border which is defined in the Constitution and Top Court annulled the bill proposing to lift the headscarf ban in the universities and higher educational institutions by seeing this change as a threat to the secular system in modern Turkish Republic.
